The Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (OBGYN) is a senior medical specialist responsible for providing expert clinical care in obstetrics and gynaecology, supervising junior medical staff, and contributing to the overall quality of maternal and women’s health services within the institution. The Consultant diagnoses, manages, and treats patients, performs obstetric and gynaecological procedures, engages in research and education, and plays a key role in the leadership and administration of the department.
Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Duties
● Provide specialized medical consultation in obstetrics and gynaecology, including antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care.
● Diagnose and manage gynaecological conditions, reproductive health issues, and pregnancy-related complications.
● Conduct regular ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and antenatal clinics.
● Perform obstetric and gynaecological procedures, including deliveries, caesarean sections, and surgical interventions as required.
● Oversee emergency obstetric and gynaecological cases and provide guidance on urgent medical interventions.
● Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient records and clinical findings.
● Promote safe motherhood practices and support initiatives to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Supervision & Mentorship
● Supervise Hospital Officers, Interns, Midwives, and other junior medical staff within the department.
● Provide clinical guidance, training, and mentorship to healthcare personnel.
● Ensure adherence to established clinical protocols, ethical standards, and best medical practices.
● Participate in the orientation and professional development of new medical staff and trainees.
Education & Research
● Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs and clinical audit activities related to maternal and women’s health.
● Engage in teaching and assessment of medical trainees, nursing staff, and allied health professionals.
● Conduct or contribute to research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives in obstetrics and gynaecology.
● Stay current with developments in obstetrics, gynaecology, and reproductive health through professional development and continuing education.
Administration & Professional Development
● Attend departmental meetings, medical staff meetings, and hospital committees.
● Collaborate with hospital administration and multidisciplinary teams to improve maternal and women’s health services.
● Ensure compliance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and clinical governance requirements.
● Participate in quality assurance, maternal mortality reviews, and risk management programs.
● Support the development and implementation of clinical policies, protocols, and service delivery improvements.
Education, Competencies, and Work Experience
Medical Qualifications:
● A medical degree (MBBS, MD, or equivalent) recognized by the Medical Council.
● Postgraduate specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
● Board certification or fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology (where applicable).
● Current licensure to practice medicine in accordance with national regulatory requirements.
Work Experience & Competencies:
● Extensive clinical experience in obstetrics and gynaecology practice.
● Demonstrated competence in managing high-risk pregnancies and gynaecological emergencies.
● Strong diagnostic, clinical decision-making, and surgical skills.
● Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities.
● Experience in teaching, mentorship, and clinical supervision.
● Ability to work effectively in high-pressure clinical environments, including emergency situations.
Reporting Structure Relevant to Position
● Reports directly to the Medical Director for clinical and administrative matters.
● Works collaboratively with midwives, nurses, paediatricians, anaesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals.

Working Conditions
● Full-time hospital-based position with flexibility for on-call duties.
● The Consultant OBGYN may be required to work long or irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
● Must be available for emergency obstetric and gynecological consultations and procedures.
● Expected to participate in hospital meetings, administrative duties, and clinical governance activities.
● The work environment includes labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, outpatient clinics, and emergency settings.
