The Laundry Attendant is primarily responsible for ensuring that patients and employees are provided with clean, hygienic, and properly maintained linen and clothing. The role involves the collection, sorting, washing, drying, folding, and appropriate storage of a variety of hospital and workplace items.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Working in collection area checking items being received.
- Assists in transporting laundry containers of soiled linen and clean linen carts
- Loads soiled linen into washers and loads clean, wet linens into dryers;
- Proceeds to fold clean, dry linen and place into clean carts
- Keeps accurate records of linen inventory;
- Maintains equipment and the laundry areas, cleans and keeps areas in a neat, orderly and safe manner
- Follows all policies and procedures of the hospital;
- Checks stock and notifies supervisor of supply needs
- Collecting and delivering items in various areas within the hospital;.
- Sorting items by colour, size or fabric type, or operating mechanised sorting equipment.
- Weighing and loading laundry into cleaning and washing machines.
- Working in the finishing section where articles are dried, pressed, ironed, steamed and folded.
- Checking that articles have been thoroughly cleaned.
- Packing, bagging or hanging items ready for collection.
- Puts Customer Service First: Ensures that customers and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals` needs and rights;
- Performs other duties as requested
Education, Competencies, and Work Experience
- High school Diploma or equivalent
- Must be able to read, write and understand the English language
- Must be able communicate well with others from other departments.
- Be able to use machinery such as washer-extractors, tumble-dryers, irons and garment-finishing equipment.
- Laundries can be warm, crowded and noisy places and the employee must be able to tolerate such. The work can involve a lot of walking, stretching and lifting, requiring the employee to be fit.
- Uniforms or protective clothing is provided and should be worn at all times.
Reporting Structure Relevant to Position
The Laundry Attendant will report directly to the Laundry Supervisor and collaborate closely with department heads, hospital management, and external stakeholders.
Performance Goals
· Process and complete a minimum of 250 pounds of laundry per 8-hour shift while maintaining quality standards and following proper sorting procedures
· Maintain 100% compliance with infection control protocols and proper handling of contaminated linens
· Ensuring adequate stock levels are maintained
· Achieve zero valid complaints related to linen quality or service delivery
· Maintain accurate daily inventory counts with less than 1% variance in monthly audits
Core Goals
- Completion of processed linen through sorting and washing procedures, with weekly quality checks documented and reviewed by supervisor.
Educational and Employee Development Goals
· Complete infection control review within first 90 days - critical for maintaining hospital safety standards and proper handling of contaminated materials
· Learning all aspects of laundry operation in the first year which will allow persons to act as supervisor backup at anytime,
